Diplômé de l’université Pierre et Marie Curie, Frédéric Tournier a soutenu une thèse en biologie cellulaire et moléculaire du développement en 1992 (Laboratoire du Dr Michel Bornens, Centre de Génétique Moléculaire, CNRS, Gif-sur-Yvette). Il a occupé pendant sa thèse un emploi de moniteur d’enseignement (1989-1991) puis d’Attaché Temporaire d’Enseignement et de Recherche (ATER) à l’Université Paris 7 (1991-1993). Nommé Maître de Conférences en 1993, il a rejoint le laboratoire du Pr Francelyne Marano (Laboratoire de Cytophysiologie et Toxicologie cellulaire) à l’Université Paris 7 où il a développé une thématique propre portant sur la différenciation des cellules épithéliales des voies respiratoires supérieures. Il a monté puis dirigé une équipe de recherche (DER : Différenciation de l’Epithélium Respiratoire) entre 1994 et 2005 et il a soutenu une Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) en 2002. En septembre 2005, il a rejoint Celogos (laboratoire de recherche privé dans le domaine de la thérapie cellulaire) en tant que directeur de laboratoire.

En 2008, il rejoint l’équipe Sciences & Médias, dirigée par le Pr Baudouin Jurdant. Entre 2008 et 2014, il assure en parallèle plusieurs missions universitaires : chargé de mission « relations lycées » entre 2008 et 2010, délégué du Président à la Vie Étudiante, puis Vice-président Vie Étudiante entre 2010 et 2013. En 2013-2014, il est responsable des formations humaines pour l’EIDD (Ecole d’Ingénieurs Denis Diderot).

Depuis plusieurs années, il mène des recherches transversales et pluridisciplinaires dans le domaine du théâtre de science et il étudie l’histoire, l’actualité et le devenir des stations de recherche marines françaises en collaboration avec Jean-François Ternay. Il a participé en janvier 2022 à une mission de recherche au Costa Rica (biodiversité des drosophiles) pour laquelle il a réalisé un film (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCjDf3BIKq0) et publié un article dans The Conversation. Il a été membre de l’équipe des « Treize minutes » (2010 – 2015), et il est membre du Groupement de Recherche 3581 – CIL.
